HALLOWEEN SAFETY
Halloween is a time for fun and spooky celebrations and activities, but it can also be a time for some truly scary fire safety hazards.
HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
Here are some Halloween fire safety tips to help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration:
Choose flameless decorations: Instead of using real candles in jack-o'-lanterns or decorative luminaries, opt for battery-operated LED lights. They provide a realistic flickering effect without the fire hazard.
Keep costumes safe: If your child's costume includes flowing fabric or capes, make sure they are flame-resistant. Avoid costumes with trailing ribbons or long, billowing skirts that could come into contact with candles or open flames.
Use flame-resistant decorations: When decorating your home or yard, choose flame-resistant or flame-retardant materials whenever possible. This can reduce the risk of decorations catching fire.
Keep candles out of reach: If you do use real candles, keep them out of the reach of children and pets. Place them on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, and never leave them unattended. Consider using candle holders with protective glass or metal enclosures.
Clear walkways and exits: Ensure that walkways, stairs, and exits are well-lit and free from obstacles. This will help prevent trips and falls, reducing the risk of accidents and potential fires caused by candles or other open flames being knocked over.
Inspect Halloween lights: Check Halloween string lights and other electrical decorations for damage before use. Replace any frayed cords or damaged components to prevent electrical fires.
Supervise bonfires and fire pits: If you plan to have a bonfire or use a fire pit as part of your Halloween festivities, always follow safety guidelines. Keep a safe distance from flammable materials, have a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave the fire unattended.
Teach fire safety: Remind children and adults about fire safety rules, such as stop, drop, and roll in case of clothing catching fire. Discuss the importance of staying away from open flames and being cautious around decorations.
Have a fire extinguisher handy: Keep a working fire extinguisher in a visible and easily accessible location. Make sure family members know how to use it in case of an emergency.
Plan escape routes: In case of a fire emergency, make sure everyone in your household knows the escape routes and where to meet outside. Practice fire drills to ensure everyone can evacuate safely.
